The most common refrains heard when photographers swarm during Fashion Week is, “Who is that?” followed by, “What, exactly, does she do?” But at 3.1 Phillip Lim, the It Girls lining the front row were of the hard-working variety. Both Annie Clark, better known as the singer-songwriter St. Vincent, and Oh Land took a break from recording to attend the show alongside Gia Coppola, who’s been busy shooting videos for fashion brands like United Arrows. In fact, Oh Land has found her Phillip Lim 31 Hour bag quite useful when it comes to toting things in and out of the studio; “I use it all the time—I put my dog in it!” While the Danish musician prefers packing capes when she’s on tour (“It’s really easy to just throw one on and then you don’t have to think about combining a lot of stuff”), when she’s working on new tunes it’s all about light and airy pieces. “I feel like I need to wear loose clothes when I’m recording, and I can’t wear any jewelry, because I need to feel free. So I usually wear really big shirts with flower prints or something that reminds me of freedom,” she explains. Coppola also stays away from overly fussy pieces while working. “You need comfortable shoes because you’re standing all day—definitely not [heels],” she noted. And don’t expect to see her in the same leather pants she wore to the Lim show; as she explained, “I don’t wear leather that often—there’s definitely a time and a place, you need to be at the right event.” But of the three, no one has embraced easy dressing like Clark. “I read once that Albert Einstein picked out one outfit and just stuck with it, and I tend to do that—my style is Einsteinian,” she said, laughing. “I’ve been wearing these Phillip Lim leather shorts for far too long!” It makes packing for tours easy, since Clark usually just brings “a lot of black, because it doesn’t show when it’s dirty—I kind of have a uniform on tour.” As someone who performs for a living, she has trouble just sitting back and enjoying fashion shows. “I still get nervous—for the models! Norma Kamali Come March, Kamali is launching a new line, Kamalikulture. Everything in the collection will sell for under $100, focusing on timeless dresses, suiting and swimwear. Available exclusively online, the collection is based on an idea the designer first came up with back in the ’70s, when she wore a lot of vintage dresses from the ’30s: creating “antiques for the future.” Kamali explains: “Like the dresses I was wearing from the ’30s, I wanted my styles to be worn in the future. There are a number of styles in the Kulture collection that I actually designed in 1974, like the all-in-one dress.” Her main collection, too, focuses on the idea of timelessness with a smidge of the ’30s, thanks to polka dots and turbans. Nanette Lepore Flouncy gold lamé dresses and foulard prints popped up in Lepore’s bohemian fall collection, inspired by “tarot reading with Oscar Wilde.” Looks in chartreuse and cyan lent a modern jolt to the gypsy-inspired beaded tops and lace skirts. Levi’s To debut its first ever globally-focused collection (phasing out designs targeted specifically to certain locales like Asia or Europe), Levi’s pulled off another first with the help of 48 models: its debut New York Fashion Week show. The aim was to show the brand in a more elegant and refined way—a vision three years in the making—by working its signature denim in new treatments and silhouettes. Suzanne Rae Young designer Suzanne Rae Pelaez—who, by the way, would love to dress Tilda Swinton—went the “poetic and rock’n'roll” route for fall, inspired by the “internal revolution” of Jim Morrison, Aldous Huxley, and William Blake. Diaphanous white cape blouses and leather corset dresses were juxtaposed against lots of velvet, the first time Pelaez tried her hand at the fabric. Elie Tahari A crowd of cocktail-laden guests mingled in Tahari’s showroom as his models (some of whom were the designer’s friends, family, and staff) chatted, smiled, and moved about their display vignettes. A tight palette of cool blues, greens, and purples colored everything from alpaca fur coats to simple cropped pants.

Though Rachel Zoe was furiously snapping pictures of the sequined evening gowns that closed Michael Kors’ runway collection yesterday, we were lingering on the hotpant-meets-turtleneck silhouette with which he opened the show. Though it may be the least practical thing we’ve seen on a runway thus far, it’s the most appealing and, strangely, flattering. It may not be red carpet appropriate, but we’re determined to find a place—other than Kors’ perfectly glossy runway—in which the outfit makes sense. After a week’s worth of chatting with a slew of lovely ladies—from supermodels Lara Stone and Coco Rocha to buzzed-about beauties Ashley Smith and Ajak Deng—it’s time for a bonus round. As New York Fashion Week continues on, new trends are unveiled for fall 2012 that offer a breath of fresh air from seasons past. Leather, military influences, and, most of all, fur (hats, coats, tops—you name it) have all had a strong presence on many of the runways. Taking a break from traditional autumn hues like black, green, and plum, bold orange shades have also graced many designer collections. As for dresses and skirts, most fashion houses have opted to bring it down a notch—length-wise, that is. Models kept chic and sophisticated in knee-length designs by Nicole Miller and Costello Tagliapietra. Check out the most popular trends emerging from NYFW below.
1. Fur detailing
Carolina Herrera and BCBG Max Azria; Imaxtree
Fur continues to pop up all over the runways in new and different ways: colorful statement coats, vests, and even peplums.
2. Elbow-length leather gloves
Prabal Gurung and Diane Von Furstenberg; Imaxtree
While this accessory may seem like a relic of ages past, NYFW thinks it’s due for a comeback. Wear these gloves either with cropped sleeves or a sleeveless dress—we love the outerwear/bare skin combo.
3. Orange

Finally—some color! While black and white are dominating NYFW, many designers are using orange to bring a pop of color into their collections. Designs range from darker hues to bright patterns, so expect to incorporate at least one of these shades into next season’s wardrobe.
4. Military chic
Alexander Wang and Jason Wu; Imaxtree
Sir, yes sir! Many designers have added military touches to their designs, including structured shoulders, epaulets, and big buttons—all with a feminine twist.
5. Knee-length dresses

The longer the better: most collections have dropped the mini look in favor of more elegant, knee-length designs.

Once we got Oliver’s “Who Will Buy” out of our head last night (its popped back in just typing those words), we started thinking about the hats on Marc Jacobs’ runway. The furry creations were whipped up by Stephen Jones, and Jacobs told the Times‘ Eric Wilson that he was inspired by Jamiroquai. Of course, our thoughts turned to Clueless first—Deon loved a good hat—but Jamiroquai should’ve been obvious. The only question is who will wear it first, and, well, that’s pretty obvious, too. Anna Dello Russo’s already laid claim to the pink one.

Although Camila Alves enjoyed showing off her rose-cut engagement ring—fiancée Matthew McConaughey popped the question on Christmas Day—while she waited for Yigal Azrouel to start, she insisted that she’s not just a diamonds-and-furs girl. Besides the occasional shopping stop at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, the model admitted that she’s also a serious thrifter. “I like to go to the middle of nowhere—I found really good places in Arkansas! I love Austin for vintage shopping, and there are some really good places in L.A., too,” she says. The key, according to Alves, is endurance: “You have to make sure that you have plenty of time and patience, since there can be a lot of stuff to go through. Just the other day, in Texas, I walked into a place and had no patience—I was like, ‘I gotta walk out of here and come back another time.’” She attributes part of her thrifting success to seeing the potential in items that aren’t perfect. “A lot of times you find pieces that are really great, but people—because it has rips or it doesn’t fit them right—go, ‘I’m not going to get it.’ But with vintage you pay, like, $2, and then you pay a little bit for alterations,” Alves explains. “You get it, then you take it to someone to fix it, and then it’s worth it—and it ends up being less expensive [than something new]!” But her vintage obsession has created one problem: an over-stuffed closet. “I have vintage things that I got nine, 10 years ago, and every time I clean my closet, I can’t get rid of them,” says Alves, adding, “I think, ‘I will never find this again!’”

Photo: Getty Images Chicago-based designers Shane Gabier and Chris Peters have officially caught the fashion world’s attention. Guests at the duo’s Creatures of the Wind presentation packed tightly under the Desmond Tutu Center’s vaulted ceiling last night to catch a glimpse of their waxed leather circle skirts and metallic jacquard cropped pants. The 24-look collection stayed true to the brand’s DNA — “We really love color, we really love texture, and we really love patterns together,” Gabier noted after the show — but it also explored new territory. A first foray into eveningwear produced a floor-sweeping, tiered mint chiffon dress, which Gabier would love to see on Kirsten Dunst: “She really epitomizes [the brand].” But, he adds, “We try to keep that open, limiting it to one specific girl. I think PJ Harvey would look really fantastic in it, too.” The label’s knitwear offering was expanded upon (pale blue mohair sweaters! cashmere dresses!), and Gabier and Peters tried their hand at a full shoe collaboration, producing point-toed metallic cut-out boots with Tabitha Simmons, who Gabier calls “the best collaborator ever.” And staying true to their Second City roots, the pork pie hats which topped off many of the looks were done with Chicago-based millinery Optimo Hats. The string that tied all of these elements together? A fixation on Scottish clergyman Robert Kirk’s 1691 expose, The Secret Commonwealth: Of Elves, Fauns, and Fairies, and the doorway between the real world and the fairy world. “It’s always about atmosphere, that’s always kind of our starting point,” Gabier explained.

For celebrities looking to cut loose before the official after-party, Charlotte Ronson is their fashion show; this is, after all, where Samantha Ronson takes a break from her DJing duties to blast an air horn as the models take their final walk. This year, however, things were a bit crazier than usual in the front row. No one, it seemed, came alone—Sky Ferreira was joined by her boyfriend, the Virgins bassist Nick Zarin-Ackerman, Byrdie Bell sat next to her beau Nicholas McCarrell, and Angela Simmons came with not one guest, but two: her uncle Russell Simmons and her Pomeranian. It’s been a busy Fashion Week for Simmons—she’s already logged appearances at BCBG Max Azria, Tadashi Shoji, Costello Tagliapietra, and Cynthia Rowley—but it seems there’s a secret to her endurance: “You need to make sure you eat—if you don’t, you’re going to be exhausted. I’m a little tired, but [on Thursday] I got a 20-minute quick power nap that got me going.” The hardest part for her? Getting dressed. “There’s so much pressure [to look good]—I changed twice yesterday. I started the day in a completely different outfit,” she said. Nikki Reed’s no stranger to the quick change either, having traded the sequined jacket she wore to Rebecca Minkoff a few hours earlier for a Charlotte Ronson suede blazer and dress. Turns out it’s much harder to decide what to wear for a fashion show than for the red carpet. “First of all, the red carpet is about who you are and your style, but there is also something about glaming it up and going with what’s in style, whereas at a fashion show it’s about showing your personality a bit more, so there’s a little more pressure to get it all right,” she explained. Not everyone was so worried about getting ready for the show. Nicky Hilton insisted that she didn’t spend much time thinking about what to wear—“I get dressed very fast,” she noted. Same goes for Ferreira, whose rolled-out-of-bed rock’n’roll look isn’t an act: “I go to the fitting or whatever, they send me clothes…and then I just put on some lipstick and I go!”
