Class of 1993
A child of the 90’s, my early years were spent daydreaming of a southern California zip code, red BMW convertible, and an emotional unavailable flannel-clad boyfriend that I would secretly make out with in the boiler room all set to the soundtrack of the angst-fueled apathy of grunge music.
The decade marked by economic prosperity and sense of invincibility and/or freedom has ironically resurfaced in today’s pop culture-take for example CW’s revival of 90210. While never one for imitation and content with the preservation of Kelly Taylor as West Beverly High resident slut and not the school’s Mrs. Teasley, I have found a way to incorporate some 90’s into my own lineup.
One of my favorite collections from NY fashion week was model/stylist/all around cool chick, Erin Wasson’s collaboration with RVCA. The line reads like Aaron Spelling’s costume designer checklist-bustier halter-tops, tapered boyfriend jeans, acid wash denim vests and floral baby doll dress. The line is a mix of laid back Lords of Dogtown Penny Lane-types mixed with the raw street urchins of Alphabet City. Imagine if Tupac and Notorious BIG did a duet-genius.
I was lucky enough to get a couple of advanced pieces before they hit stores. It seems that London is equally inspired. With society rebel Alice Dellal as the muse du jour and designer Henry Holland’s ode to the early nineties exposé of trust fund babies in the land of silicon, bleach and the beach.
If fashion’s cyclical nature has prematurely resurrected the early 90’s, is it safe to say that in the near future we may see pleated plaid mini-skirts, thigh-highs and other Contempo Casuals-esque merchandise synonymous with another 90’s blond Californian style icon?
