Couture Diaries: Day 2
Karlie Kloss at Dior. Photo: Getty ImagesMonday, January 23rd8:30 – Wake up call!9:14 – Dressed and ready in almost head-to-toe Prada…boots by Lanvin, Chloé coat day.9:18 – Quick espresso before heading to see the first collection of the day: Versace. 10:30 – Arrive at École des Beaux-Arts at10:30 sharp as instructed, but they are not letting editors in yet. Models are still practicing and photographers are getting their shots.10:48 – Photographers are ushered out and we are ushered in.10:49 – Gold staircase/platform and no seating. Roughly 75 editors (max) are allowed to gather around the foot of the golden stairs.10:56 – Diane Kruger, Cameron Diaz and Abbie Cornish emerge from backstage and take their places standing amongst the crowd of editors. Loving Cameron’s super sleek and cropped new bob!10:59 – The impossibly tall Karlie Kloss begins to climb up the pyramid of stairs, poses at the top, and then slinks down the side facing editors.11:14 – What began with a flow of smooth and languid iridescent dove grey looks, ends in a rush of lemon yellows, sour limes, and juicy tangerine tones. Looks are trimmed in super shiny sculpted metal to underline the seaming and shape. Looks like there is not one, but several Oscar worthy contenders! A limey one-shouldered sequin number would be my pick for Cameron as it was shown on equally sporty Carmen—and would look stunning with Cameron’s new white blonde bob.11:16 – Editors shuffle out to awaiting street style photogs on the Quai. I decide to dash down one block to the Dries Van Noten boutique.11:19 – Realize that I am clearly not the only one who had this idea, as I peruse the new spring collection in between several E-I-C’s.11:45 – I make it out of the Dries store with only an additional pair of sunglasses. Phew!Joann's new glasses!12:03 – Walking back to the hotel I pause momentarily on one of the bridges as I cross over the Seine. Being here in Paris never gets old.12:30 – Meet a friend for lunch at Ladurée’s original Rue Royale location (of course). The Salade Concorde might be the best salad created. Ever.13:31 – Wave goodbye and catch a taxi over to Karla Otto’s Parisian headquarters. I’m headed there to see Marni’s pre-fall collection (it never made it to NYC).13:47 – Ogle the adorably quirky mix of plaid and prints and brocades. They tell me that collection is supposed to feel a bit rebellious in spirit. Love. (The coat before is my favorite!) I found some adorable jewelry too, which, if they can rush us the high res images can be squeezed into April’s upcoming jewelry guide just in the nick of time. From Marni's pre-fall collection.14:18 – Next it’s over to Avenue Montaigne where the Christian Dior show is being held (instead of its regular musée Rodin location), which is nice as it appears it will be set up in an intimate salon style approach.14:41 – Front row includes Bar Rafaeli, Olympia Scarry, Caroline Sieber, Olivia Palermo, Gaia Repossi, Natalia Vodianova, Elettra Wiedemann and a very busy Cameron Diaz. Somebody’s on a mission!14:50 – Lights up, music starts, first model out: Karlie Kloss. If I tweeted it would read something like #whatsnew #officiallyasupermodel #soskinny14:51 – Songstress-of-the-moment Lana Del Rey is going to be setting the mood for this show. Cue “Video Games.”14:55 – Girl after girl trots past so close that sometimes their dress brush across your knees. That’s about as front row as it gets.Dior's ladylike front row. Photo: Getty Images15:03 – The palette is mostly black, white, sedate purple and a range of corals to fiery red. The silouette is classic Dior: full skirts with a 50′s vibe. A few pieces are embroidered with quotations about “Elegance” that you can almost read as the girls pass by. Loving the purple nail color on all of the models’ fingers and toes. Mental note: run out and buy Dior Vernis, Shadow 783.
