Real men wear pink, and in Chris Benz’s case it’s suitable for everyday. The rosy-haired Seattle native moved to New York to attend Parsons and started his own label after stints at Marc Jacobs and J.Crew. The CFDA Emerging Designer Award winner has a rabid affinity for juice cleanses (they must come in handy this time of year) and is sentimental for sketchbooks. Here he breaks it down for ELLE, one question at a time.

In just a few short years, Charlotte Ronson has become a fashion megastar. In October, The New York Times, sang her praises, labeling the designer as “the girl with the golden touch,” and “one of the most successful retail entrepreneurs of her generation.” In the spirit of the holiday season, we’ve asked Ronson about her famous family, elephants in New York, the sensation of falling in your dreams, and why above all, family trumps everything (and maybe her little dog Oliver too).

Forbes just published its first ever 30 Under 30 list. In its entirety, it actually honors 360 individuals under the age of 30 who, they write, answer the following questions: “Who is reinventing the world? Who should you hire today? Who will you be working for in 20 years? Who, in short, under the age of 30, matters?” The nearly 400 names are split into categories like energy, music, media, food and wine, science, real estate, and art and design. The latter, of course, is stuffed full of fashion names. Joseph Altuzarra leads the pack; they even call him “fashion’s next Marc Jacobs.” He’s joined by the 25-year-old Olsen twins and Alexander Wang—both of whom have created mini-empires at ridiculously young ages. From there it gets more surprising. Pamela Love’s earned a spot on the list, as well as Molly Yestadt, of Yestadt millinery. Their names were chosen by a team of Forbes reporters and narrowed down by three judges: Chuck Close, Jeffrey Deitch and Simon Doonan. If you’d sat on the judging panel, who would you have chosen?

Diana in the black Emanuel gown, Getty
Though the world has a new future Queen to look to for fashion fantasies, it’s hard to forget Princess Diana’s emblematic style. Her gowns continue to fetch high prices at auction, and now five of them will be on public display at Kensington Palace. Beginning March 26th, the palace will host a handful of the late royal’s most memorable fashion moments—from a fuchsia silk dress by Catherine Walker to a black shift designed by Gianni Versace. Also included in the line-up is a controversial strapless black taffeta gown by Emanuel that received criticism in the 80′s for its dark color and revealing neckline. How times have changed, as Duchess Kate wore something quite similar to a military ball over the weekend—garnering rave reviews for her bold, uncharacteristically sexy choice (courtesy of Alexander McQueen). The exhibit will be creatively titled, ‘Diana,’ and it’s part of a celebration for Kensington Palace’s $19 million renovation, just the start of a giant year for the royal family. 2012 will also mark Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, of which Duchess Kate is an ambassador, so there’s much more regal fashion to come!

2012 is looking to be a good year for Gisele Bundchen: Her “dream mansion” in Los Angeles is nearly complete, her husband has secured the New England Patriots a place in the NFL playoffs, and now she’s nabbed not one, but three major spring campaigns. In addition to starring in ads for both Versace and Givenchy, the Brazilian bombshell’s turn for Salvatore Ferragamo’s spring ’12 collection just leaked. It’s another beachside shot, although this one trades Givenchy’s all-black ensemble and goth surfboard for a tropical-print silk dress and a palm tree. Meanwhile, Bundchen’s Givenchy colleague Mariacarla Boscono, who posed in the spring ’12 ads with Chris Moore and Simone Nobili, is another multi-campaign threat; her latest is a solo series for Yves Saint Laurent. For these photos, shot by David Sims (a break from Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, who had shot YSL for nine seasons straight), the Italian model is working ultra-arched eyebrows and a haircut that we can only describe as a high-fashion version of the Lisbeth Salander. Diane Kendal and Guido Palau get credit for the makeup and hair, respectively, but it seems that Dragon Tattoo mania has swept even the fashion houses. If both Bundchen and Boscono are busy next season, may we suggest Rooney Mara?

Bottega Veneta may not rank highly in the minds of animal lovers, seeing that their spring 2012 collection alone featured glazed crocodile, grommet-covered ostrich, and lizard skin accessories. But their standing with tree-huggers just went up. The luxury brand’s Milan headquarters was recently awarded a “Carbon Neutral 2010” certification. It’s apparently just the beginning for Bottega though. The brand is planning to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during their fashion week and sales campaigns—times of the year when pollution spikes, according to the brand. No surprise, considering the amount of power, energy, and air travel that goes into producing a single show. Luckily they’re already moving in the right direction by using carbon credits to offset additional impact. Bottega isn’t the first luxury label to go green, though. Stand-out predecessors include Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood who takes part in the International Trade Centre’s ethical fashion program. Maria Cornejo‘s also on board—she used fabric made of recycled cassette tapes in her pre-fall collection. All in all, this is certainly a spring trend that we can get behind.

MAC always has new and exciting collaborations, but this might be the most unexpected (and best) one yet. Chic and glamorous Iris Apfel is next in line to come out with, in our opinion, a long overdue makeup line. The 90-year old fashion icon and self-declared “geriatric starlet” is infamous for her large rounded spectacles and daring fashion sense. Scheduled to hit stores January 5th, the line consists of various lipsticks, shadows, nail polish, and blushes. Our personal favorites are the bold and bright Pink Pigeon lipstick and the Orielle Orange nail polish, both an accurate reflection of Iris’ kooky style. MAC’s press release describes the line as being “inspired by a rare bird who has always been ahead of her time.” So make sure to snag your favorite items from the collection, they’re guaranteed to go fast!

Among the many reasons Marc Jacobs said no to leading the house of Dior? He thinks couture is “archaic.” Jacobs said that though he considered the position, and was flattered to be asked, he’s happy at Vuitton. “I’ve been saying that for a long time,” he said. “There have been on-and-off conversations about Dior. I don’t know; maybe someday in the future, maybe years from now, I may end up going someplace else, maybe Dior. But right now I am at Vuitton.” Talks between Jacobs and Dior were said to have broken down in September, for reasons as varied as money, staffing and aesthetic, but Jacobs makes the discussions sound more casual than the media believed. His name has been replaced with Raf Simons’, who’s currently at Jil Sander. One reason the fashion pack’s rooting for Sander is his obvious interest in couture, as demonstrated by his last two collections. It sounds like Jacobs couldn’t be less interested in the art of couture: “The idea of couture doesn’t hold that thing for me. It’s archaic—in my opinion. I mean, I am really interested in the craftsmanship behind couture. But I can explore all that in ready-to-wear. With couture, one dress each season is photographed by a couple of magazines; there’s no advertising; it reaches 20 customers. I don’t feel there is anything lacking in what we do. I get to work with these amazing craftsmen. Maybe not the same ateliers that would make a couture dress, but, again, we are not in a deficit for working with people who create beautiful things. I am not sure I ever looked at couture as this great opportunity.” If Simons is in fact the next Dior designer, here’s hoping an announcement’s made before the end of the year.

That Kendall Jenner, the tall leggy brunette in a silk taffeta skirt at left in the above photo, might actually have a career in modeling, is the most promising thing about the Kardashian family’s Christmas card. The blue tinted portrait—which looks extra funny because it’s meant to be viewed with 3D glasses—separates the Kardashians into vignettes: the young ones are grouped at left, the matriarch is in the middle (the only one wearing color), and the right is split according to the Kardashian sister families. Kim stands in the middle, alone. The newly single reality TV star said, “I love our family Christmas cards shoots and I think this one looks amazing!” What do you think?
