Celine Dion put a twist on menswear when she donned an over-sized, backwards Dior white tux to the Oscars in 1999. Some said she recovered it from the Titanic wreck, while others adored a peak of her seductively bare back. Then again, those who’ve adopted this style include sexy red carpet regulars like Angelina Jolie, Dita Von Teese, and Ashley Olsen. Whether you’re a fan or foe, the androgynous ensemble makes for a flirty conversation starter. Here’s what to consider if you’re going to try the tux trend on for size:
Longevity:
Max Mara’s 2011 resort collection featured a tux-inspired look in its all-white and black-trimmed top and tailored white pants. And who can forget Dolce & Gabbana’s 2009 RTW collection featuring Jessica Stam in a puffy shoulder all-black tuxedo paired with a crisp white button-up shirt and a black bow-tie. Cynthia Rowley also took a stab at tuxedo dressing back in her 2001 RTW collection. It’s in, it’s here, and it’s not going anywhere.
Wearability:
Tuxedo ensembles are not limited to blazers and tailored pants. Show off those sleek legs with tuxedo-inspired dresses (see Thread Social’s and JOSEPH’s tux dresses), or look effortlessly chic in a tuxedo tunic (see By Malene Birger’s cotton shirt) and a pair of black leggings.
Personality:
There’s something attractive about women in menswear. From boyfriend jeans to your boyfriend’s white tee, we’re more attractive than ever when sporting a pair of tailored pants and structured blazer. Don’t forget to think about colors—monochromatic suits and color blocking suits are trending.
Save vs. Splurge?:
Splurge. Nothing looks more dreadful than flimsy fabric for a high-brow look like tuxedo dressing. Splurge, splurge, splurge on good quality blazers (practical for any occasion) and make sure to have your pants hemmed or French cuffed. Now, start shopping and show ‘em who’s the boss ladies.
