Be Bad... For Now
No one is perfect at any particular thing, especially not when we start. Sure, some people are naturally athletic or artsy or intelligent, but that doesn't mean that you can't do it, too. It's easy to look at something, whether it's a sport, hobby, or class, and think, I can't do it. Someone else is better. I'll look like a fool if I try.
My answer: So what?
So you're not an expert at dance the moment you walk into the studio. So it takes you a few tries to understand the math problem on the board. So what? Are you going to give up because you don't get it right away?
I can't count the number of times I told myself I was done with writing. I would look at my work and think that I wasn't any good. I would read a fantastic story and feel discouraged by my own attempts. But by encouraging myself to keep going, by looking for ways to improve instead of focusing on my faults, I'm here, writing for the Star Blog, and I couldn't be happier.
My advice to you is to let yourself be bad at first. Don't be afraid to make a mistake in your drawing, or strike out. Learn what you're good at, learn what you can do better...and do it! Don't compare your first attempt to someone else's final product; your only competition is yourself. Don't be too hard on yourself when you fail; soon enough, you'll look back and wonder why you ever thought of giving up.
Despite what we might think, it's impossible to be perfect at anything. There's always room for improvement, and that's not a bad thing! The more you practice, the easier it gets, and the more you accomplish. So dolls, be bad for now, and do better next time.
Til next time!
