The Dos and Don’ts of the Middle Part

Ever wonder how the Kardashians get their coveted hair styled and camera-ready every day? The secret: it’s all in the middle part. But mastering the middle part can be tricky, so we’ve rounded up the dos and don’ts of the center part. Do: Add waves. Straight hair with a middle part is an extreme look (if you can pull it off, why not), but waves add a softness that makes your overall look less harsh. Rachel Bilson’s mastered the middle part, and the loose waves add the perfect soft finishing touch.

Don’t: If you have a cowlick (as many of us do), part your hair slightly off center to avoid looking like Cameron Diaz in There’s Something About Mary.

Poor thing had no idea! Do: Use an anti-frizz serum like this one by John Freida. Flyaway hair can tend to get extra frizzy either side of the part, and static is pretty obvious with a middle part as well.

Katie almost has it down-just a bit of anti-frizz serum at the roots and it would’ve been absolute perfection!

Don’t: Have an uneven part! If you’re going to take the plunge with a middle part, at least make sure it’s a straight line! Use a fine-toothed comb or bobby pin starting from the tip of your hairline, moving straight back to create a clean centered part. Mary Kate and Ashley are surely both queens of the middle part, but their (minimally) uneven parts could be the one thing preventing them from achieving total perfection.

Do: Add the finishing touches with a spray for a glossy sheen and a totally sleek look. We love this Shine On product by Bumble and Bumble. Just a spritz of this, and you’re good to go.

The tricky middle part is no match for Elle Fanning—she totally aces the easy breezy look every time without fail.
