Winter Festivals Part 4
The Winter Solstice: This is a very very old festival significant in almost all of the Pagan/Celtic calenders (Wicca, Druid, etc) and occurs on the shortest night of the year - usually the 21st or 22nd of December in the northern hemisphere of the earth and 20th or 21st of June for the southern. Many people that celebrate it gather to historical places such as Stonehenge to watch the sunrise and simply for a social gathering during the event, many other things are done during this celebration as well such as the burning of insence and oils (usually ones associated with the moon - as well as smelling nice and creating a nice aroma they relate back to ancient teachings of celebrating and worshipping the moon), create suitable alters for worship within their homes and do rituals such as various types of meditation. Because the festival is so old there are no set rules as to what people have to do during the Winter Solstice and many people do different things - some simply acknowledge the fact that it is the Winter Solstice and don’t do much else.
