Smoke on the Eyelid
The smokey eye. A quintessential and classic eye look that almost anyone can pull off. So, when did it begin, and will it ever end?
I can answer these questions in one fell swoop! The smokey eye has been around since Egyptian times, in fact, ever since Kohl has been around. Hence, I doubt it's going to phase out like a trend. But wait a minute, what is Kohl?
Kohl is an ancient eye cosmetic made from the act of grinding stibnite. It's a black substance used in the same way modern eyeshadow and mascara is. Except, back then, the substance was thought to ward off evil spirits and protect the soul. Now, it is the go-to sultry look to emphasise your eyes. I have to say, I'm not surprised that this type of look had thoughts of holding mystical powers.
Maybe all those red-carpet celebrities have caught onto something!
Is the smokey eye in your repertoire?
