Plant of the Week: Coconut Tree part 2
Hello darlings! First of all, I'd like to apologize for my absence, It's been very busy for me lately. But here I am, with my promised facts about the coconut tree! So:
-If you own a coconut plant seedling, in 10 years it will be big enough to fit inside a room. Tilt it and its top will start to bend vertically.
- The leaves in ancient times were used by Polynesians to weave baskets, rugs and hats.
- Its trunk was used for the lower portion of the Polynesians' canoes. Drums could also be made. In modern times, furniture is made out of it, since it's said to be a good type of wood.
- In the Philippines there's a palace made entirely of the tree!
- The roots are said to have medicinal properties, and are good to treat skin problems.
-The plant's origin is believed to be from the Southeast Asia and the South Pacific Islands. Althought we associate it with Hawaii, it wasn't in the archipelago, and was brought by natives hundreds of years ago from what is know as French Polynesia today.
-It's fruit! The coconut, botanically speaking, is a drupe, not a nut. It features 3 dots; the middle one is the easiest to open. To open it (BE CAREFUL!), search for the bottom, where the 3 lines that compose the fruit join, and, with a hammer, hit it carefully and with gradual impact all around the tip, and it will crack open.
-The coconut is said to be the fruit of life, being the fruit with the most vitamins, containing Vitamin C, B1, B2, B3, Phosphorus, Magnesium and Potassium.
